Price development of natural fancy color diamonds.
The market for investment qualities has been recorded continuously since 2005. The figures show how differently the individual colors have developed.
Where the figures come from.
The independent Fancy Color Research Foundation has recorded wholesale prices in the leading trading centres since 2005: Hong Kong, New York, Geneva, and Tel Aviv. Only investment qualities are covered, not the jewelry trade. Publication is quarterly, at the beginning of February, May, August, and November.
On this page we show only the freely available figures of the Foundation. More detailed analysis we discuss in person.
Development by color.
Since the start of the record, natural fancy color diamonds have gained 202.1 per cent in the overall index. The individual colors developed very differently.

Colored and colorless move apart.
The comparison with colorless diamonds is telling. While these lost 16.5 per cent of their value in 2023, natural fancy color diamonds gained 2.2 per cent in the same year. Through periods of rising interest rates and volatile equity markets the segment remained comparatively calm.
Recent quarters have been marked by consolidation at a high level. It was above all the rarest categories, Fancy Vivid in pink and blue, that held their value.
What an index cannot do.
An index describes a market, not an individual natural diamond. Two stones of the same color and weight can differ considerably in price when saturation, clarity, cut, or origin diverge. The figures therefore do not replace the valuation of an individual piece; they only place it in context.
Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
Common questions
Where do the figures on this page come from?
From the independent Fancy Color Research Foundation. Since 2005 it has recorded wholesale prices in Hong Kong, New York, Geneva and Tel Aviv, for investment qualities only and not for the jewellery trade. Publication is quarterly.
Do past figures say anything about the future?
No. Past performance is not an indicator of future development. The figures show how the market has behaved.
Why do the colours develop so differently?
Because their rarity differs and because demand runs differently. Between two examples of the same colour and weight there can also be considerable differences in price where the intensity, the clarity, the cut or the origin diverge.
