Fancy Color Diamonds: rarity, value and perspective
Fancy Color Diamonds are among the rarest treasures of nature. Only about one in ten thousand natural diamonds shows a natural colour, and only a fraction of those reaches the colour intensity classified as Fancy in the trade. Whereas with colourless diamonds the absence of colour determines the value, with Fancy Color Diamonds it is exactly the opposite: the more intense and pure the colour, the more valuable the natural diamond.
Colour, intensity and formation
The colour range extends from yellow and brown through pink, blue and green to extremely rare tones such as red, violet and orange. International laboratories such as the GIA classify colour intensity in grades from Fancy Light through Fancy and Fancy Intense up to Fancy Vivid and Fancy Deep. Even a single grade of difference in intensity can multiply the value of a natural diamond. Three factors are decisive here: hue, saturation and the evenness of the colour distribution.
Each colour also tells its own geological story. Blue diamonds owe their colour to traces of boron, yellow diamonds to the element nitrogen, while pink diamonds were formed by enormous pressure conditions during their formation deep within the earth. These formation conditions cannot be repeated. What nature has created over billions of years is finite.
Why Fancy Color Diamonds are so valuable
The value of Fancy Color Diamonds rests on a simple economic principle: constant, growing demand meeting a structurally declining supply. With the closure of the Australian Argyle Mine in 2020, the source of more than 90 percent of all pink diamonds worldwide dried up. New deposits of comparable quality are not in sight. The supply of blue diamonds is also declining, as the output of the most important sources continues to decrease.
At the same time, international demand is growing. Collectors, family offices and wealthy private individuals from Europe, Asia and the Middle East compete for a supply that becomes smaller year after year. The auction results of the major houses regularly confirm this trend: exceptional Fancy Color Diamonds repeatedly achieve prices well above their estimates and set new records per carat.
The development of recent years
The figures of the independent Fancy Color Research Foundation, which since 2005 has recorded wholesale prices in the leading trading centres of Hong Kong, New York, Geneva and Tel Aviv, speak a clear language. Since the start of data collection, Fancy Color Diamonds have gained 202.1 percent in value overall. Pink diamonds rose by 389.8 percent over this period, blue diamonds by 239.5 percent (Fancy Color Research Foundation, Fancy Color Diamond Index, recorded since 2005, as at Q2 2026, published on 1 August 2026).
The comparison with colourless diamonds is particularly revealing: while these lost around 16 percent in value in 2023, Fancy Color Diamonds recorded a gain of more than two percent in the same year. Even in phases of economic uncertainty, rising interest rates and volatile equity markets, the segment proved remarkably stable. The most recent quarters were marked by a consolidation at a high level, with the rarest categories in particular, above all Fancy Vivid qualities in pink and blue, impressively proving their durability of value.
This development underlines the character of Fancy Color Diamonds as a long-term instrument for the preservation of value. It is not about short-term speculation, but about securing wealth across generations, independent of currencies, stock exchanges and geopolitical developments.
Why the right access is decisive
The market for Fancy Color Diamonds is not an open market. The truly rare qualities often do not reach open trade at all, but change hands discreetly within established networks. Anyone who buys without sound expertise and without direct trading relationships either pays excessive prices or acquires qualities that do not meet the standard of an investment. Worlds lie between a beautiful jewellery diamond and a natural diamond suitable for investment, worlds that are barely recognisable to the layperson.
This is precisely where Welcome Future AG comes in. As a family business with roots since 1982, we have grown, direct relationships with the relevant trading centres and sources worldwide. Our expertise is documented by certifications from the leading gemmological institutes GIA, IGI and HRD. Every natural diamond we offer our clients is examined by us personally, is certified by an independent laboratory and meets clearly defined investment criteria in terms of colour, clarity, cut and rarity.
This also includes access to diamonds from the Argyle Mine, whose documented origin today represents a value factor in its own right. As a family office we also think beyond the acquisition: we support our clients with valuation, discreet storage, insurance and, if desired, a later sale. Fancy Color Diamonds are a matter of trust. We have earned this trust for more than four decades, in the second generation, with discretion, expertise and personal support from central Switzerland.
We would be glad to show you in a personal conversation which possibilities Fancy Color Diamonds offer for your individual wealth strategy.
