Certificate and origin.
Whether a natural diamond is suitable as an investment is not decided by its appearance but by three records: color intensity, natural origin, and impeccable provenance.
How the value of a color diamond arises.
With colorless diamonds, the absence of color determines value. With natural fancy color diamonds it is the other way around: the more intense and pure the color, the higher the value. Only about one in ten thousand natural diamonds shows a natural color at all, and only a fraction of those reach the intensity classified in the trade as fancy.
The GIA grades intensity in steps, from Fancy Light through Fancy and Fancy Intense to Fancy Vivid and Fancy Deep. A single step of difference already leads to considerable price differences in the market. Three factors matter: hue, saturation, and the evenness of the color distribution.
Where the colors come from.
Blue diamonds owe their color to traces of boron, yellow ones to nitrogen, and pink ones were formed under enormous pressure deep within the earth. These conditions cannot be repeated. What nature created over billions of years is finite, and that is the foundation of the value.
GIA, HRD and IGI.
A certificate from GIA, HRD, or IGI provides the objective basis for color, weight, clarity, and cut. It also records whether the color is of natural origin or was treated afterwards. For an investment this entry is decisive: a treated natural diamond follows an entirely different price logic.
We work exclusively with certificates from these three institutes. A piece without an independent laboratory certificate is not considered, however convincing it may look.
Kimberley Process and an unbroken chain.
The Kimberley Process is an international certification system intended to prevent trade in conflict diamonds. For each shipment it confirms that the goods come from conflict free production. For us this record is a condition of entry, not an addition.
Beyond that, what counts is that each stage can be traced. The shorter and clearer the documented path from mine through manufacturer to investor, the more robust the valuation and the easier a later sale.
Common questions
Which certificates carry weight?
For investment purposes, the reports of the large independent institutes. They state colour, intensity, clarity, cut and natural origin against a uniform standard and can be verified internationally.
What does the Kimberley Process show?
That a rough diamond does not come from a conflict region. The papers accompany the route from the mine onwards and form part of the documents we present for every single natural diamond.
What happens if a certificate is lost?
The certificate number is recorded on the natural diamond itself as a laser inscription. In that sense the certificate cannot be lost. If the document itself goes missing, the institutes issue duplicates. Beyond that there is our own continuous record: we document every natural diamond in writing and in photographs before handover, so that the attribution remains evidenced.
Have your documents reviewed.
If you already own a natural diamond or have an offer in front of you, we are glad to look at the certificate and the provenance.
